Fearless Tigers surging like 2003 Marlins in wild-card push
The Tigers weren’t supposed to be here. But with a week left in the regular season, they’ve become baseball’s most dangerous underdog.

Raise your hand if you expected to be talking about the Detroit Tigers and the playoffs in 2024.
On 2 Jocks & a Schlub, I wasn’t buying into them. Last year, I predicted they’d make the playoffs, and they finished 78-84.
Even through much of August, I thought their only real asset was ace and likely Cy Young winner, Tarik Skubal.
But here we are. As of today, the Tigers hold the sixth and final AL playoff spot.
They’ve surged with a young, inexperienced squad, which got me thinking—how much do they resemble the 2003 Marlins?
Turns out, the similarities are striking.
